Christopher Nolan's legendary action saga, The Odyssey, stands as a movie we've been eagerly awaiting ever since it was revealed. It firmly sits among the most hotly anticipated motion pictures coming next year. As a pre-Christmas treat, a preview has now been released, though it's hampered by YouTube's poor compression—perhaps explaining why Nolan initially kept the preview exclusive to cinemas.
The Initial Look of the Stellar Ensemble
The debut footage reveals Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus. Audiences are introduced to Tom Holland as Telemachus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. In a poignant moment, Penelope asks her husband to vow he will return, to which he look up and question what occurs should he fail. Furthermore, the preview provides a quick, obscured look at Polyphemus the Cyclops, from whom sheep are are taken by the hero and his men during their arduous journey.
Based upon a cornerstone of Western literature, The Odyssey chronicles the epic journey undertaken by the famed ruler. Following his victory at Troy, as told in Homer's Iliad, the king faces a long and perilous return to his homeland.
Mythical Encounters and a Star-Studded Lineup
Along his path, the hero encounters countless challenges and legendary creatures. This roster features the witch-goddess Circe, who transforms men into swine, and the deceptive Sirens. Despite these trials, his sworn oath is to do whatever it takes to reunite with Penelope and Telemachus in Ithaca.
The adaptation's cast boasts an impressive lineup. Alongside the leading trio is Charlize Theron as the cunning Circe, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, and Jon Bernthal.
A Story Repeatedly Told
The classic poem has seen numerous adaptations over the years. These range from modern retellings and a late-90s dance production. It has even been a stage musical adaptation called Epic: The Musical, released in the form of a nine-album collection.
