The governing board of the prestigious performing arts venue has voted to change its name the Trump-Kennedy Center, as confirmed by the White House.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt declared online that the board's vote was unified, citing "the tremendous efforts President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building."
"This promises to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt reach new levels of grandeur and success," Leavitt continued.
The planned renaming is expected to be deeply divisive, particularly in Washington, D.C., where the center has served as an iconic landmark since its construction and christening for President John F. Kennedy.
Background of the Institution
Shortly after beginning his term, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's incumbent trustees and installed loyalists in their positions. The reconstituted board subsequently voted to appoint Trump as chairman.
The president helped procure approximately $257 million in federal funds to finance major renovations and operational expenses at the aging venue.
Historical Roots
The concept for a federal performing arts center began in the 1950s. Following the tragic death of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the planned venue was named in his honor.
